UK iGaming SEO: en-GB Targeting for Great Britain
Target Great Britain with en-GB, and only for a brand that holds a Gambling Commission license, which the Commission requires wherever the operator's equipment sits. Treat Northern Ireland separately, since the Commission does not regulate gambling there.
In brief
- Locale:
en-GB. The region code for the United Kingdom is GB, never UK. - A Gambling Commission license is needed to provide remote gambling facilities to consumers in Great Britain.
- The Commission does not regulate gambling activity in Northern Ireland, though GB-based remote operators that offer or advertise gambling there still need its license.
- 2026 changes for content: a 10 times cap on wagering requirements and a ban on mixed-product promotions from January 19, 2026; gross deposit limits by the end of September 2026.
Regulator and license
The Gambling Commission regulates gambling in Great Britain under the Gambling Act 2005, as amended by the Gambling (Licensing and Advertising) Act 2014. Licensing works on a point-of-consumption basis: the Commission says you need a license from it if you provide facilities for remote gambling to consumers in Great Britain. The Commission's public register lists licensed businesses, so it is the place to confirm a brand before any page is annotated en-GB.
Locale and URL decisions
- Value. Use
en-GB.en-UKis invalid because UK is not an ISO 3166-1 code, andukon its own is the language code for Ukrainian. - Domain. We found no rule fixing the domain extension for Great Britain in the sources we checked. A folder such as
/en-gb/or a .co.uk domain both work; what matters is a consistent hreflang set and URLs that match the brand's licensed websites. - Northern Ireland. The Commission states that it does not regulate gambling activity in Northern Ireland, where gambling falls under separate legislation. There is no hreflang value for Great Britain alone, since GB covers the whole United Kingdom, so state on the page which territory the license and offer cover.
- Same-language sets. If the brand also runs
en-CAor other English versions, make the country differences real: license, age, help line and currency.

Safer gambling and help
The minimum age for gambling in Great Britain is 18 in most cases, including online. The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, is free on 0808 8020 133 and open 24 hours a day. Show it on every en-GB template, and do not reuse it on pages for other markets.
